The Remote Vocational Training Scheme (RVTS) is a vocational training program for medical practitioners in remote and isolated communities throughout rural and remote Australia. The purpose of the program is to train doctors in remote communities for remote communities. This meets the training needs for Fellowship for both ACRRM and RACGP and is an approved 3GA vocational program for medical practitioners.
The Program aims:
To facilitate access to vocational training by all doctors across Australia
To contribute to the recruitment and retention of doctors in rural, remote and, First Nations communities
To improve the quality of services available to rural, remote and, First Nation communities by enabling access to vocational training
The 3-year (RACGP) and 4-year (ACRRM) program delivers structured distance education and remote supervision to doctors while continuing to provide general medical services in their community.
RVTS has numerous advantages for registrars when compared to other training programs such as AGPT, RACGP PEP, and ACRRM Independent Pathway.
It is a fully funded program and there is no application fee
Reduce training time to 3 years
Eligible for doctors on general or provisional/limited registration with a minimum level 3 supervision with AHPRA or on the MDRAP program at the time of application
Eligible for temporary residents, permanent residents, and citizens
90% pass rate
Full access to A1 Medicare rates and earn over $200k+ as a GPT1
Fully subsidised training workshops
Remain in one location throughout your training (must be a MMM4-7 location)
Train towards fellowship of ACRRM and/or RACGP
The RVTS program has 2 streams.
The Remote Stream is eligible for all doctors working in MMM4-7 locations
The AMS Stream is eligible for all doctors working in Aboriginal Health Services in MMM2-7 locations
RVTS offers 22 Remote Stream and 10 AMS stream doctors per year. They also offer 5 targeted recruitment places which are included in the total. Under the targeted recruitment strategy, RVTS aims to recruit doctors to locations of high workforce needs throughout Australia. The 2023 approved location list includes locations in Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and, the Northern Territory.
It is important to note RVTS will currently accept doctors working under DPA replacement provisions in non-DPA area, providing they meet the MMM requirements above.
It is essential to understand that doctors must be working in the location prior to applying for RVTS. Non-DPA areas are not eligible for the More Doctors for Rural Australia Program (MDRAP). They are also unlikely to receive a Health Workforce Certificate (HWC). So, please be mindful or speak to your Charterhouse GP recruiter or RVTS staff to gain better understanding on this before deciding.
Recent changes to the program have increased the intake from once a year to now twice a year. The closing date for applications for the mid-year intake is April 16, for a July 2023 intake. Approximately 50% of the 22 Remote Stream places will be taken in Round 1, so we strongly recommend doctors apply for Round 2 if they are not interviewed in Round 1.
It is a known fact that 66% of all applicants are successful in gaining a place on the scheme.
The great thing about RVTS is that you do not require an onsite supervisor. However, there is a requirement for at least one other GP to be onsite at the practice. The GP does not need to provide supervision, or to be fellow of the RACGP or ACCRM themselves.
With over 20 years of experience training rural and remote GPs, RVTS is an outstanding choice of vocational training program. Fully funded and with a 94% pass rate, registrars enjoy high-quality, structured education and supervision from experienced and passionate rural practitioners. Doctors will enjoy a program renowned for its relaxed atmosphere, highquality training and world-class support. All adding up to a great training experience.
