Could you provide a brief overview of your professional profile?

I practise general psychiatry with a specialisation in older person psychiatry and forensic psychiatry.

What attracts you to locum work?

The variety – I get to do lots of different types of things, such as private inpatient and community-based care, consultation liaison work, and emergency work. There is also variety in terms of populations and clinical issues, which requires a diverse skill set.

The work allows me to learn about different mental health services. It also allows me to travel, meet new people and see new places. I’ve travelled across Australia with my work.

When did you start working with Charterhouse Medical?

In 2014. I’ve had a number of placements through them since then. They’ve ranged anywhere from one week to two months in duration.

What locations has Charterhouse Medical placed you in?

I’ve been placed in a variety of settings in New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria and the Northern Territory. Bendigo, Sale, Tamworth, Perth, Kalgoorlie, Adelaide, Warnambool are some of them.

What are the highlights of your locum experience?

They have all left a positive impression with me. I’ve enjoyed working at all the sites. I mentioned earlier the variety of the work and the opportunity to meet new people and experience different mental health services. It’s also the nature of things I’ve learned on each placement.

There is a high degree of professionalism and attention to detail within the team. They are understanding and sensitive to the challenges that going into a new health service and being away from home can present to a locum doctor. They go out of their way to make sure that the role is a good fit. They facilitate contact with doctors who’ve worked at the sites they are recruiting to, which allows me to get a firsthand account of what it’s like to work there before I arrive. They take care of all the travel arrangements and accommodation and are very responsive to my enquiries and requests for information. I look forward to continuing to work with them.
